Orvis

Orvis had their early rods produced by Phillipson and later rolled their own glass blanks.   Phillipson made rods are fairly easy to identify as they look like Phillipsons.

The following chart lists the complete set of Orvis glass fly rod models extracted from the catalogs for years 1966 through 1987, which cover the entire range of Orvis glass rod offerings.

Notes

  1. Fiberglass tip-over-butt with metal ring on the female ferrule. (Not documented in the catalogs.)
  2. Rod tube states 3 1/8 ounce rod weight, rod states 3 1/4 ounce rod weight.
  3. Orvis rates this rod as 7' length and all pieces add to 7', but when assembled the rod will measure 6' 9" due to compression inside the ferrule.

I have two Phillipson Orbises from the early 70s and a non-Philiipson from a bit later. The Phillipsons are dreams; the later rod is a dog.

I am looking for someone with info on a L.L. Bean "LL" 6' 4" spinning rod that looks as if it were a Phillipson; same color, type of lettering, Nickel silver ferrule, carbaloy guides. Would you have info on when Phillipson made these. I belive the rod is from the early 60s since other items I purchased were from that time-frame. I am at striper5162@hotmail.com
